SOL PURPOSE

Q2 | 2023

As we strive for solar Infrastructure + Impact, Sol Systems works with our partners and customers to engage with and invest in under-resourced communities and communities that are adversely impacted by climate change.

In this newsletter, you will hear more about our vision and the approach to achieving it, the community organizations we work with, and our journey to help accelerate a just and sustainable energy future. Additionally, we will share information about events, webinars, and articles we are reading, focusing on an equitable clean energy transition.

In this edition of our Infrastructure + Impact Spotlight Series, we pay homage to our partner, SOME, an interfaith community-based service organization whose mission is to break the cycle of poverty and homelessness through programs and services that help transform the lives of individuals and families, their communities, and the systems and structures that affect them. Sol's Chris Accou details the amazing work of SOME, including specific success stories, like that of the Bonner family (pictured).

Partner Spotlight:
Appalachian Voices

Appalachian Voices is an economic development and environmental nonprofit organization that envisions an Appalachia with healthy ecosystems and resilient local economies that allow communities to thrive. Appalachian Voices brings people together to protect the land, air, and water of Central and Southern Appalachia and advance a just transition to a generative and equitable clean energy economy. Its goal is to establish economic solutions that create community wealth and sustain Appalachia’s mountains, forests, and waters.

Our partnership fund will expand the work of Appalachian Voices’ established Appalachian Solar Finance Fund, a regional financial and technical assistance program designed to catalyze solar development in coal-impacted communities throughout Central Appalachia. The Fund provides grant funding, repayable project financing, and predevelopment technical assistance for solar projects on nonprofit organizations, public entities, and commercial businesses that serve as anchor institutions in their local communities. Specifically, the Sol Systems-supported “Solar Readiness” fund targets facilities whose key barrier to solar is poor roof conditions. These buildings will be supported with funds to help offset a portion of their roof replacement needs.
